Simple causes of cooling system failure are a bad thermostat, water pump, leaking hose or lack of coolant. These items are easy to inspect and replace or service. They should be checked every time your vehicle is brought in for a transmission service, oil change or brake service.

Just as a reference, a thermostat can cost $35.00 ~ $95.00 plus labor to replace. The cost of being stranded on the road in the middle of nowhere is much more.
